BIOENGINEERING

Introduction

The Department of Bioengineering was started in CMC - Vellore in 2003 to develop a platform to apply engineering knowledge to health care and medical research. Collaboration with a number of departments in the college and hospital is an essential aspect of the department.

The department has an academic program under Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum, which lead to Master of Science in Bioengineering and a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengineering degrees. These are postgraduate programs in engineering (requiring an undergraduate engineering degree) with an emphasis on application of engineering principles to biology and medicine.

I. EDUCATION

Academic

(i)M.S., & Ph.D., Program

The academic program in Bioengineering leads to the degrees of MS and PhD. The degrees are awarded under Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum. The department of Bioengineering works closely with several other departments in the institute and current work ranges across physiological measurement, systems modelling, prostheses design, biomechanical analysis, and biomedical signal processing.

Lecture and seminar based courses on Instrumentation, Image Systems, Physiological Systems, Signal Processing, form part of the basic training. Both the MS Bioengineering and PhD are specialized engineering programs with emphasis on research. Ms candidates will undertake a research project of one year duration, while PhD candidates will undertake a substantially larger research problem. Students will interact closely with at least one of the clinical or basic science departments to formulate a research question.

These degrees will equip you to apply quantitative and engineering methods to solve healthcare problems. Career prospects include academic research and teaching careers as well as R & D in the medical devices industry.

Eligibility

All aspiring candidates should have an undergraduate degree in engineering, preferably Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science or equivalent. Doctoral aspirants require a Masters degree in engineering, and should have some exposure to advanced biology. A qualifying GATE score is required.

Admission

Application to these programs is usually advertised in February, and candidates must apply before end of April. An interview of short-listed candidates will be conducted in June to select suitable candidates.

(ii)M.Tech., CLINICAL ENGINEERING & Ph.D MEDICAL DEVICES AND TECHNOLOGY

The M.Tech., & Ph.D., programs are jointly conducted by Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum and Christian Medical College, Vellore, with students spending prescribed durations in each institution. The aim of the Clinical Engineering program is to train engineers to manage and ensure the safe and effective use of technology in hospitals and health care delivery points. The M.Tech., Program includes a mandatory internship and the course is 2½years in duration. The aim of the PhD(Medical Devices and Technology) programme is to train engineers to carry out research and development in the field of biomedical devices and technology. This degree will be formally awarded by IITM and SCTIMST.

Program Structure

In the first semester of the program the students are at IIT-Madras where they take courses in engineering, molecular biology, and management . In the second semester the students are at CMC where they take courses in engineering, physiology, anatomy, and clinical practice. The M.Tech., students then spend the third semester and the fourth semester at SCTIMST, undergoing courses in medical devices, biomedical technology. In the fourth and fifth semester, the internship and a project will be undertaken and the Ph.D., Students will undertake full-time reseach for their thesis after the second semester.

Eligibility

For M.Teh:B.E/B.Tech.,/Recognized four year course; on the basis of GATE subject (AE, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, IT, ME, MN, PI, TF, XE) and score.

For Ph.D:M.E/M.Tech.,/M.S.(Engg); B.Tech. With exceptional record.

Admission

Admissions are administratively handled by the office of IIT-Madras, and selection is by a committee comprising members from all three institutions. Application to these programs is usually advertised in February/March by IIT-Madras, Short-listed candidates will be called for an interview usually held in June.

II. RESEARCH

Research in the Department of Bioengineering is focussed on solving medically relevant problems. The clinical departments in the hospital, help in testing and evaluating the products. Most problems are defined in association with one or more departments in the hospital or the medical college. Faculty from these departments are involved in the research through the period of development.
