POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN FAMILY MEDICINE FOR RECENT MBBS GRADUATES

The Post Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine for recent MBBS Graduates (PGDFM) is a 18 months course which seeks to support MBBS graduates working in secondary (smaller) hospitals.

Since most of the medical colleges in India provide tertiary care, the predominant focus of the MBBS training is on tertiary medicine. This is one of the reasons why MBBS graduates find it difficult to work at the sub tertiary level.

Secondary hospitals are important health providers particularly in rural and semi urban areas. CMC Vellore has a network of 225 secondary hospitals across the country. Our institution has specific emphasis towards training health professionals to work in the network of secondary hospitals and other needy areas.

Some of the challenges of training doctors for secondary care are: The limited availability of laboratory facilities, need to provide cost effective medicine, competency in handling a variety of medical problems as well as local health problems.

CMC Vellore has developed the PGDFM for recent MBBS Graduates course to support young doctors who are working in secondary hospitals soon after their MBBS training. This PGDFM for recent MBBS Graduates course aims to train the graduates in rational and competent practice of family medicine at secondary level. This course provides an opportunity for the graduates to learn as they work. We hope that the PGDFM for recent MBBS Graduates course will ease the transition of the graduate from tertiary to secondary care. By a judicious combination of contact sessions, distance learning and project work, the course is designed to allow the graduates to continue to do their regular work, learn within their own context and apply their learning in practice. The course will in turn help the graduates to choose and prepare for subsequent postgraduate training.
