PHYSIOTHERAPY STUDENTS

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy course is of four year’s duration, followed by a six month compulsory rotating internship. Students enroll in this course after completing 12 years of school. The annual intake is limited to ten students.

Optimisation of maximal abilities and function, for leading a reasonably independent and productive life, in the presence of disabilities is the major focus of education and training.

The course comprises of didactic classroom teaching and demonstration in the first year. In the subsequent years (2nd, 3rd, 4th), clinical teaching is added with equal emphasis on didactic and practical classes. Subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Exercise Therapy, Electrotherapy, Biomechanics, Clinical Orthopedics, Neurology, and Cardiopulmonary are some of the topics that are included in the study.

At the end of the study program, the students are equipped to use physical agents and principles like force, heat energy, sound energy, light energy etc., to treat and alleviate pain and disability caused by various illnesses and ailments. Besides using specialized equipments like LASER, Short Wave Diathermy, Ultrasound, Electrical Stimulation, Interferential therapy to produce and enhance healing and recovery using the above said Physical principles. Manual Therapy which emphasizes a “Hands on” approach without using specialized equipment is also used.

Physical therapy is an expanding field with a good jib market both in India and abroad. Selection into the program is competitive. From the origin as a diploma program, it has moved to a degree program. Masters and Doctoral programs are available in a few Institutions in India.

The requirement (permission) from the Ministry of Health, Nursing Council of India and the Allied Health Council) is not required for Allied Health Students. Students under this category will pay Rupees 1000.00 as Processing fees and Rupees 6000.00 as Tuition fee per six weeks.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY STUDENTS

The Occupational Therapy Education in Christian Medical College was started in 1969 by Ms. Jean Bald. It was initially a Diploma course and was upgraded to a Degree in 1982. At present the course is of four and a half year’s duration and a six month rotating of internship.

For the first two years the student curriculum includes mostly basic sciences like Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology, Sociology, Medicine, Pediatrics, Orthopedics and Neurology. The clinical subjects in Occupational Therapy are mostly taught in the 3rd and 4th years. The students start their clinical placements from the second year onwards.

The students are placed in various clinical settings in Occupational Therapy. The clinical areas are situated both in the hospital and college campus and include Psychiatry, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Neurology and community oriented rehabilitation.

In the OT unit at the Department of Psychiatry patients with disorders like schizophrenia, Bipolar disorders and anxiety disorders are provided intervention to improve work skills, group skills and to develop a balanced activity configuration. The Rehabilitation unit caters to patients with spinal cord injury, Brain injury and other similar physical disorders. The therapy focuses on facilitating independence in self-care, functional ability, home making skills and work skills. For the patients with Brain injury the therapy includes coma stimulation and cognitive perceptual training. In the community unit the patients are provided intervention in their homes as much as possible and referred to other facilities when required for further intervention.

There are two units that provide intervention for children. At the Nambikai Nilayam unit the parents of children with developments disorders are provided training to facilitate skill behaviors in their children. The goal is to facilitate skills in their children and to reduce maladaptive behaviors. In the hospital campus (Developmental Pediatric unit) children with various disorders are provided intervention to facilitate developmental milestones including gross motor skills, fine-motor skills, oral-motor skills and cognitive perceptual skills. In the units that cater to adults with physical disorders the conditions seen include arthritis, hemophilia, amputation, cerebrovascular accident, low back pain, cerebellar ataxia and other orthopedic and neurological disorders. The students learn to assess patients, set goals and carry out the intervention in all the above areas.

The students are also given opportunities to be involved in organizing sports, games and talent shows for adults and children with disability and to make a difference in the quality of life of people with disability.
