The present Bio-Medical Engineering Department (BME) was started as a small section named “Electronics Section” to repair and maintain Medical & Electronic equipment in the Hospital in the year 1971 by Dr. Henderson (Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering) from New Zealand. After him, Dr. Henry Jacob and then Er. Elangovan headed the section in the subsequent years till 1976. The section was then headed by Mr. Chittranjan Reddy, an Electronics Engineer and continued as the Head & Superintending Engineer from 1976 to 1998. During his period, the Electronics section attained the Department status. After him, Mrs. Indumathi, Superintending Engineer, led the department from 1998 to 2020. The Electronics department was renamed as Biomedical Engineering department and is led by Mr. Arul Prakash, Superintending Engineer, since 2020. The Biomedical Engineering department received NABL Accreditation in the field of Medical Devices Calibration in the year 2021.
The BME department comprises Engineers, Diploma Engineers, and Electronic Mechanics. All are involved in the maintenance management of Biomedical Equipment in the hospital. The BME department has an in-house Service Section and Calibration Lab equipped with Analyzers, Testers, and Instruments for servicing & calibrating almost all types of medical equipment.
The BME department maintains all Biomedical Equipment in Intensive Care Units, Operation Theaters, Wards, Out Patient Departments, Radiodiagnosis and Imaging, Radiation Therapy, Laboratory etc. The Pneumatic Chute System used for transport of blood samples and blood bags is also maintained by BME. The BME department is involved in new projects starting from Equipment Planning, Execution, Installation and Commissioning. BME has computerized all its activities and developed in-house software for Inventory, Maintenance and Calibration maintenance of Biomedical Equipment.
The main responsibilities of the BME department are
Medical Equipment Planning
Pre-Installation Inspection
Preventive Maintenance
Breakdown Maintenance
Annual Maintenance Contracts
Calibration & Testing
