Although CMC provides extensive healthcare services through its hospitals and outreach programmes, its vision of excellence in education, service, and research places education and professional formation at the heart of its mission.
There are 100 seats for MBBS, and 100 each for Bachelor and Diploma of Nursing and 226 for undergraduate Allied Health programmes.
The College of Nursing is a WHO collaborating centre for Nursing and Midwifery Development.
Beyond academic excellence
A CMC education goes beyond academic excellence. It develops healthcare professionals grounded in compassion, integrity, service, and excellence, professionals equipped not only with the knowledge and skills to deliver quality care, but also with the commitment to serve others and improve lives.
Founder’s vision becomes institutional culture
From the beginning, Ida Scudder understood that her mission could not be achieved by treating patients alone. Her vision was to train Indian women – and later men and women – to become healthcare workers who would first serve the surrounding villages and later, communities across the country. So she began teaching ‘compounders’ (modern-day pharmacists) and nurses. Education has now extended to hundreds of courses.
What is distinctive about education at CMC?
There are a number of distinctive features of CMC courses. All of them, including nursing, are taught by qualified, experienced faculty who also participate fully in the clinical and administrative operations of the hospital. The faculty are also committed to nurturing and mentoring students to enable their all-round growth in social and spiritual spheres as well as the intellectual.
The courses are extremely practical, with students learning skills on the job in clinical and working laboratory settings. While providing a full exposure to the very best in hospital medicine, there is also a strong emphasis on community and family medicine, and students spend time in rural community settings and small secondary hospitals in different parts of India.
Education – a gift that keeps on giving
At CMC, we believe that education is a gift to be shared, and not a commodity to be sold. The hope is that those who benefit from a value-based education at CMC will, in turn, use their knowledge, skills, and experience to serve humanity and contribute meaningfully to society.
For these reasons, education is heavily subsidised at CMC – the annual MBBS fee, excluding accommodation, is currently less than 90 thousand rupees, despite the estimated cost of educating a student being several lakhs per year. This makes it one of the lowest for an unaided, private institution in the country.
Students who may find even these subsidised fees difficult to afford are encouraged to apply for scholarships, which are available across all undergraduate programmes, including Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences. Scholarships are awarded based on economic need and may cover part or all of the tuition and accommodation costs.
Expanding Impact Beyond Vellore
In order to extend its educational outreach to the whole of India, CMC provides opportunities for healthcare professionals, general practitioners, and alumni to update their knowledge and strengthen their clinical skills through hands-on workshops, contact-based learning, and regular clinical updates.
The two main arms through which this work is done is through the Distance Education Unit (DEU) and the Department of Medical Education.
Distance Education Unit (DEU)
DEU equips healthcare workers, general practitioners, and community-based lay leaders across India with relevant knowledge and skills through blended and distance-learning models. The approach is centred on strengthening local capacity so that practitioners can “refer less and resolve more”.
Continuing Medical Education (CME)
The CME Unit is a valuable resource not just for CMC graduates but for many other doctors in Tamil Nadu and further afield. It provides regular seminars and lectures and a journal. The College of Nursing also provides Continuing Nursing Education and a biannual journal.
Medical Education Department (MED)
Provides support for strengthening teaching and learning practices at CMC Vellore. It facilitates faculty development, academic programmes, and regional and international conferences that foster continued professional and educational growth.
These initiatives support lifelong learning by enabling healthcare professionals to update their knowledge and skills through flexible learning opportunities, seminars, lectures, and specialised programmes.
The Telemedicine Facility, established in partnership with ISRO, has further strengthened opportunities for healthcare education and knowledge sharing.
Training to serve India’s needs
One of CMC’s key roles is to help train the skilled and caring medical professionals who are desperately needed for hospitals throughout remote and rural areas of India. In order to support healthcare access in under-served regions, CMC partners with over 170 mission hospitals, churches, academic institutions, and organisations across India.
Early years
Dr. Scudder began by teaching compounders (modern-day pharmacists) and nurses, laying the foundation for CMC’s enduring commitment to healthcare education. The first formal nursing course was started over a hundred years ago in 1909. Medical training for women began in 1918 with a Licensed Medical Practitioner course. In 1942 the MBBS degree course was started and in 1947 the College became fully co-educational.
Today CMC Vellore offers 22 undergraduate degree courses (MBBS, nursing and Allied Health Sciences) and 10 undergraduate diploma courses (AHS). There are 166 post graduate courses (degrees, fellowships and diplomas) in a full range of Medical, Nursing and AHS specialities, 6 Distance Education courses and PhD programmes in various disciplines. Training is available in fields as diverse as Dialysis Therapy, Medical Records Science and Neurosurgery.

Academic Programmes
CMC offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, fellowship, distance education, and doctoral programmes across Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences.
The programmes provide training in diverse healthcare disciplines, equipping students with the knowledge and skills required to address the changing needs of healthcare.
Practical Training
A hands-on approach is central to CMC’s educational philosophy. Students learn through clinical experience, laboratory training, and practical exposure under the guidance of experienced faculty involved in patient care, teaching, and hospital services.
This approach helps students develop confidence, competence, and professional responsibility.
Community Learning
CMC places strong emphasis on community and family medicine alongside advanced hospital-based training.
Students gain experience in rural and community healthcare settings, developing a deeper understanding of healthcare challenges and learning to serve diverse populations with sensitivity and compassion.
Student Development
CMC is committed to the overall growth of students by nurturing intellectual, ethical, social, and spiritual development.
Through mentorship and guidance, students are encouraged to become compassionate healthcare professionals and responsible leaders who serve with humility and dedication.
Outreach
CMC’s educational mission extends beyond its campuses through community health training, supplementary education programmes, and capacity-building initiatives.
These efforts support healthcare professionals, students, and community organisations in strengthening healthcare delivery across different regions. They also offer Supplementary Education for Medical Students to enrich the training of medical students throughout the country and offer them hands-on experience in mission hospitals; and the Community Lay-Leaders Training Certificate which trains up to 200 NGO workers each year in remote parts of India to enable them to offer preventative and basic curative care to the communities they serve. Over 680 people are currently enrolled on these courses, including state government sponsored candidates and NGO personnel.
Central to CMC’s commitment to education is a ‘hands-on’ approach. Central to CMC’s commitment to education is a “hands-on” approach. Watch the video to see how this is put into practise for student nurses and student doctors both in the hospital and out in the community.
