Meals at Johnson House

Meals prepared at the Big Bungalow are served at Johnson House to designated visitors who are staying on the college campus, and to their occasional guests for whom prior arrangements must be made. The kitchen staff need advance information in order to purchase and prepare the right amount of food, and have provided a sign-in book, which you are requested to use. Drinking Water & Other Beverages

Drinking water at the College and at the Hospital is safe as it is chlorinated and tested. However, it is still advisable to drink safe bottled mineral water. Mineral water is widely available and cheap to buy. So make use of it. When travelling away from Vellore, drink only bottled mineral water, carbonated beverages, or hot beverages.
Bottled beverages sold in the market are safe except for those with a glass marble seal. Lassi, a refreshing yoghurt drink, made with milk and water; it is probably best not to request it unless you are certain that it has been safely prepared. Indian coffee and tea are traditionally made with boiled milk and lots of sugar. Shopkeepers will provide these drinks without milk and sugar, if you give specific instructions.

Dining Out

You may choose to eat at restaurants, called hotels, in Vellore. There are many of them, vegetarian and non-vegetarian, near the hospital, with food at reasonable prices. Some have a better reputation than others; you might want to ask experienced diners before eating out. It is best to avoid uncooked food and any cooked food that has cooled to room temperature. Eat only at places that appear reputable to you. Fried snacks sold at street stalls are mainly vegetarian and can be very spicy and carry a health risk. Fruits and vegetables are readily available, but it is best not to eat the skin, unless thoroughly washed.
There are several bakeries close to the hospital; where bread, biscuits, cakes, pastries, butter, jam, peanut butter, tinned cheese, sardines, sausages, tuna fish, and similar delicacies can be purchased.
There is also a bakery selling bread, sweets, and pastries, near the First Gate (west) of the Medical College.
