  a. SENDING & RECEIVING MAIL





By and large mail delivery is reliable by air mail and local letters. There is no mail delivery at the Guest Houses. If you expect to receive mail, you should use one of the following addresses:

If you send packages, you may wish to use a courier service or speed post, which are somewhat more expensive but reliable. Tailors can also stitch and seal a package for mailing. There are branch post offices at both College and the Hospital, and they are open every day, except Sundays and holidays. The main post office in the centre of Vellore, opposite to the Raja Theatre on the Main Road in Vellore provides a 24-hour service. In addition to the post offices, you can mail letters at any post box on the Hospital or College grounds.

Give correspondents your current and complete address, including your department name, if applicable. Using the correct postal number (zip code) is important. If you live on the Hospital campus, or use a Hospital department address, the number is 632 004. If you live on the College campus, the number is 632 002.

  b. INTERNATIONAL TELEPHONE CALLS




Telephone calls fall into three categories: ISD (International Subscriber Dialling), STD (Subscriber Trunk Dialling) and PCO (Public Call Office). International and National calls can be made from ISD and STD booths or offices. Only local calls can be made from PCO booths. On the College campus, all types of calls can be made from the CODES telephone booth, situated at Second Gate, or from the telephone booth at CHAD. On the Hospital campus, all types of calls can be can be made from the Hospital post office. The booths can be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and payment made to the booth operator when the call is completed.

It is possible to purchase a cell phone locally. However since there are government rules governing the purchase of cell phones by foreigners, if you want to purchase a mobile phone, this should be done through the Deputy Director for International Relations. You will need to submit one passport size photograph along with a copy of your passport and Indian visa.

Telephone calls may be made within the Hospital campus and the College campus by dialling the four digit internal numbers. If you encounter difficulties, call the exchange (dial 2400 / 2500) and ask to be connected to the extension you require. Callers from outside India should use the following numbers:

Internet access is available as part of the library services of the Institution. Visitors are required to sign in and to pay a fee for this service. Facilities are available to use the Internet on payment at the Bhooshanam V Moses Computer Lab on the ground floor of the College Building. Big Bungalow also has a computer with internet connection for the use of designated visitors. It is also possible to use the Internet in the Dodd Library at Hospital. Internet cafes are available in various parts of Vellore town.
E-mail facility is available in all the departments. It would be greatly appreciated if you would use the e-mail facilities for personal mail only after the official working hours.
