22. WATER AND ELECTRICITY

Please be conservative in your use of water, which will be in short supply from time to time, especially in summer. There are frequent electrical power failures usually lasting only for 15 minutes or so, but they can last much longer. At times there are also scheduled power cuts (“load shedding”), when the power is off for an hour or more, once or twice a day. Once a month, on a Saturday, the Electricity Board disconnects the electricity supply to the whole town, in order to carry out routine maintenance. There is usually an official notice warning of this shut down. Keep candles and matches within reach for those occasional times when power cuts occur after dark.

If you are bringing electrical appliances, you may need a transformer. Voltage is nominally 230 volts, but can occasionally vary from 180 to 250 volts at the worst of times.
