Vellore town is the headquarters
of Vellore District. The population of the town and its
environs is about 300,000. It is a marketing centre for
a fairly prosperous agricultural area. The streets are lined
with small shops and crowded with people, cyclists, cars,
buses, lorries and livestock. There is a 13th century fort
in the centre of the town, within which there is an interesting
large Hindu temple, a mosque and a church. The fort has
played a well-known part in Indian history. Hindus, Muslims
and Christians live happily side by side in this pluralistic
society.
