

The Biomedical Informatics Unit (BMIU) at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, was established in 2022 to advance the use of data, digital systems, and artificial intelligence in healthcare. The unit brings together clinicians, researchers, technologists, and policy experts to explore how informatics and AI can be responsibly applied to improve patient care, research, and health system efficiency.
BMIU focuses on building strong foundations for digital health through ethical AI practices, secure data governance, high-performance research infrastructure, and capacity building across the institution. The unit works closely with multiple clinical, academic, and administrative departments within CMC, as well as national and international partners, to ensure that digital innovation is aligned with patient needs, institutional values, and societal priorities.
The Biomedical Informatics Unit provides institutional support to integrate data-driven and digital technologies into clinical, research, education and administrative workflows at CMC. The unit works with departments to assess needs, guide adoption, and support the implementation of digital health and AI-enabled solutions that enhance efficiency, decision-making, and communication within healthcare settings.
In addition, BMIU facilitates the exploration of integration of artificial intelligence and health data into clinical and research workflows through safe and responsible processes. The unit provides expert advisory support and enables access to appropriate computing and data environments to ensu
re ethical, secure, and compliant use of digital technologies. Through targeted AI literacy initiatives and awareness programmes, BMIU strengthens institutional readiness while aligning digital practices with CMCโs values.
