The Department of Radiology at Christian Medical College
Vellore was founded in 1936, by Dr. Ida Belle Sophia Scudder. From its inception, the
department has been instrumental in providing healthcare with advancements in
imaging technology such as CT, MRI and interventional procedures.
The highly trained and academically oriented faculty, working with
state-of-the-art equipment, strives to provide an unparalleled healthcare
service to the people.
Over the years, the department has kept pace with the rapid changes that have
taken place in the field, with equipment and facilities that are comparable
with the best Radiology departments in the country.
The department has facilities for conventional radiography, special procedures,
Ultrasonography, Colour Doppler, Computed Tomography, US and CT guided
procedures, mammography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and a Digital Subtraction
Angiographic suite.
In July 2000, Radiology metamorphosed into a completely digital and filmless
department, with the installation of a Picture Archival and Communication
System (PACS), the first of its kind in South Asia. For the establishment
of the D.M course in Interventional Radiology, the Radiology Department was
restructured into the Department of Radiodiagnosis and the Department of
Interventional Radiology in November 2019, under the umbrella of the Division
of Clinical Radiology.
I. Plain radiographs, C- arm and portable radiographs: The largest number of examinations done in the department are plain radiographs. Using 8 machines, a mixture of both CR and DR equipment, approximately 2000 plain radiographic examinations are done each working day. Plain radiographs are done in both the main Radiology department and the out-patient extension of the department. The department also has 9 portable and theatre C โ arm machines.
II. Ultrasound and Colour Doppler studies: The department has sixteen ultrasound and colour doppler machines, including three portable ultrasound machine. The Doppler equipment list includes multiple Toshiba Xario units, a Siemens Sonoline Adara, Philips HD11, and GE Logiq P6 BT. About 365 ultrasound examinations and 60 Doppler examinations are done each day in the department. Ultrasound guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are also done, about 10 procedures being done each day.
III. Special radiographic procedures: These include IVUs, barium studies, MCUs, HSGs, sinusograms, sialograms and myelograms. Most of these cases are done in a workspace dedicated for such procedures, on a Siemens Iconos R200 with Flourospot compact 1000mA with an Image Intensifier TC chain. The cases are performed by a radiographer and Radiologist, with about 18 barium and special procedures, and 10 IVUs being done each day.
IV. Mammograms: All mammographic work is done on a Hologic M IV mammographic unit. About 15 mammograms are done each day. The exams performed include routine mammographic exams and mammographic wire localisation procedures.
V. CT Scanners: The department has three CT Scanners, a Philips Brilliance 6, a Siemens Somatom Emotion 16 and a GE 750 HD Discovery Dual energy CT, the latter having been installed in 2014. About 130 CT examinations (brain, spine, chest, abdomen, angiography) are done each working day. In addition, about 5 CT guided (diagnostic and therapeutic) procedures are performed each day.
VI. MRI examinations: MRI s have been performed using 4 (three 1.5T and one 3T) MR scanners. The scanners include a Philips Intera Achieva, Philips Achieva 1.5 T, Siemens Magnetom Avanto and a Siemens Magnetom Avanto Fit. About 90 MR examinations (neuro, spine, msk, chest and abdomen) are done each day. The 3.0 Tesla Philips MRI scanner is used for clinical as well as research purposes.
VII. Interventional Procedures: The department does a large volume of both diagnostic and therapeutic interventional procedures with a dedicated angiographic suite that is equipped with a Siemens biplane Artis Zee Angiographic unit and a Zeihm C-arm fluoroscopy unit.
Diagnostic work includes cerebral, thoracic, abdominal and peripheral angiography. Interventional angiographic procedures done include therapeutic neuro-interventions like aneurysmal coiling, stenting. Vascular interventional procedures include angioplasty, stenting, thrombolysis of acute deep venous thrombosis and embolisations.
Hepatic procedures including treatment of Budd Chiari syndrome, transjugular liver biopsy, TIPS, DIPS etc. are also done. Percutaneous drainage procedures for biliary and urological obstructions are done. Several image guided procedures are done like FNAC, biopsy, drainage, radiofrequency ablations of tumors& osteoid osteoma etc. are routinely done.
VIII. PACS: The Radiology department installed a PACS from GE in 2000, and has become a completely filmless department since then. The initial PACS installation was made possible by a grant from ASHA (American Schools and Hospitals Abroad), and the system was installed under the leadership of Dr. Ipeson Korah, who was head of Radiology at the time. PACS has helped streamline the department workflow and also handle the progressive increase in workload over the last few years.
The department presently uses the latest commercially available versions of GE PACS (GE Centricity RA1000, Universal Viewer and Zero Footprint Viewer).
