2. THE MEDICAL COLLEGE CAMPUS

The Medical College is in Bagayam, about seven kilometres south of the hospital and the town of Vellore. CMC operates free, private buses between the two, and there are frequent public buses, which charge very low fares. To use the institutional bus you will be required to obtain a pass from the office of the General Superintendent.

The campus is like a park, with winding roads leading to dignified stone buildings where young men and women live and study medicine. Faculty and college administrators carry on the educational enterprise begun by Dr. Ida in 1918. Located on the 200-acre site are all the hostels for medical students, allied health students and other postgraduate students. The departments of pre-clinical sciences are also on the College Campus. There are 3 patient care units: the Community Health Department (CHAD), which runs the 80 bed CHAD hospital, the Rehabilitation Institute for physically challenged persons and the Mental Health Centre (MHC), which is CMC’s Department of Psychiatry, and which includes Nambikkai Nilayam, a training centre for mentally challenged children. In addition the College Campus accommodates the homes and apartments of many CMC staff members, as well as the Big Bungalow (the residence built for Dr. Ida, which now serves as a guest house for visitors), the Big Bungalow Annexe, and other residences for visitors and volunteers.

If you live on the College campus, you would enjoy a morning or an evening walk. A map of the campus is included in this guide for directions.
