9. THE INSTITUTION’S POLICIES IN RELATION TO VISITORS, VISITOR-OBSERVERS, AND VOLUNTEERS

Legal requirements in India do not permit independent hands-on patient care by visiting medical, nursing or any other persons. The visitor may be permitted to "shadow" clinicians, attend rounds, witness patient interactions in the outpatient department, examine patients under supervision, and observe surgery and various investigations. They also may be permitted to attend the department academic sessions and to be involved in other departmental activities.

Written entries in official documentation by a visitor is discouraged, and even if permitted will have to be countersigned by a CMC staff consultant. No drug prescriptions can be written. In spite of these restrictions there is a world of experience that can be gained to make the trip worthwhile. Medical volunteers will need to be registered with the Medical Council of India, but similar restrictions still apply. However they may be allowed to conduct academic and teaching sessions with the departments.
