NEUROCHEMISTRY UNIT

Dr. Christhunesa S. Christudass, Professor and Ag. Head

Dr. Christhunesa S. Christudass holds M.Sc. in Biochemistry from University of Calicut and Ph.D. from Department of Neurology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. After a brief stint in AIIMS as a "Biochemist" (Scientist grade), he spent around four and one-half years as a "Postdoctoral fellow" in Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, USA, studying blood-brain barrier biology in neuro infections and later studying molecular and morphologic biomarker research in prostate and other urologic cancers. He also underwent a month-long hands-on advanced training in neurometabolic disorders diagnostics at Kennedy Krieger Institute, Baltimore, USA during Jan ‐ Feb 2016. He is actively involved in research studies, funded by various agencies, either as principal or co-investigator or mentor, focusing on (i) genetic risk factors in stroke, and (ii) cancer stem cells (CSCs) in gliomas. One of his proposals on glioma stem cells was selected for UGC research award (2014 ‐ 16) under Biomedical Science category.

Dr. Prabhakaran V, Professor

Dr. V. Prabhakaran joined the Department of Neurological Sciences in 2013 as faculty. He completed his PhD program on 2008 at Neurochemistry Laboratory, Department of Neurological Sciences, CMCH, Vellore and soon after he did his postdoctoral research at University of Chicago in the field of Cancer Biology. Currently he is involved in both basic and clinical research and his areas of interest includes, understanding the molecular mechanisms of neuro-infections with chronic inflammation and brain cancer, identify diagnostic blood inflammatory markers for neurocysticercosis to overcome the need of brain imaging using microarray and mass-spectrometry.

Dr. Mahalakshmi C, Lecturer

Dr. Mahalakshmi joined the Faculty of the Department in 2004 after completing M. Sc., Biochemistry under University of Madras. She completed her Ph.D in Neurochemistry Laboratory under The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University guidance of Dr. Anna Oommen in 2012. Her special interests are amino acid metabolic disorder s and Lysosomal storage disorder.

Mr. Raja Solomon, Sr. Demonstrator

Mr. Raja Solomon completed B.Sc. MLT from CMC Vellore and M.Sc. in Biomedical Genetics from IBMS, University of Madras. Before joining his current position, he worked as an Associate Research officer in the department of Neurological Sciences, studying the genetic aspects of different types of strokes and thrombosis in pregnancy, for a period of 4 years. His major field of interest is role of genetics in neurological disorders - specifically in stroke, migraine, dementia etc., and in drug resistance. Apart from research, he is also involved in genetic and biochemical diagnosis done in Neurochemistry laboratory, providing training and collaborating with other departments in genetic analysis. He is currently working as Senior demonstrator in the neurochemistry laboratory.
