17. BANKING

Changing money in Vellore poses some challenges. When you need to encash a travellers’ cheque in foreign currencies, the most convenient place to do it will probably be at FOREX, the money changers situated in Gandhi Road. Banks are reluctant to change travellers’ cheques in foreign money, having experienced bogus cheques in the past. Have your passport with you for identification. Please note that you cannot change travellers’ cheques at the extension counters of the State Bank at the College.
It is advisable to keep your receipts until you leave India, since you may be asked during the exit procedure to show documentation related to your expenditures while in the country.

And remember, before you board your plane on leaving India, you must pay an airport departure tax, which is currently Rs.600/-.

Automatic cash dispensers, or ATM (Automated Teller Machines) banking facilities are now readily available in Vellore. There are State Bank of India and Centurion Bank ATM machines at Second Gate at the College. There is also an ATM machine of the Central Bank, situated above the post office at Hospital and a State Bank of India ATM machine at the front of the ISSCUC Building, opposite to the Accident and Emergency. Rupees can usually easily be withdrawn at the ATM machines, using the Credit, or Debit card from your own foreign bank.
