The CMC Story

The Christian Medical College Vellore, located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, is an unaided minority educational institution established in the year 1900. Started as a single-bedded clinic, under the leadership of Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, the only daughter of second-generation American missionaries, it grew into a full-fledged medical college imparting education in medical, nursing and allied health sciences. Today, it is one of the top-ranked educational, healthcare and research institutes in the country.

In 2018, we celebrated the centenary of medical education; 2024 was the centenary year of the Town Campus and 2025, the 125th year of CMC Vellore as a whole.

Commitment to Compassionate Care

In delivering healthcare, CMC fosters a culture of caring, upholding its commitment to professional excellence. This compassionate approach ensures that every patient is treated with dignity and respect throughout their healthcare journey.

Excellence in Healthcare Delivery

For decades, CMC has been synonymous with excellence. It has successfully maintained a balance between offering state-of-the-art treatments and being inclusive. By minimizing the financial burden on patients, CMC plays a pivotal role in improving healthcare across the country.

Highly subsidised education

Medical education at CMC began in 1918 with a Licentiate Medical Practitioner course designed to impart medical training to women. In 1942, the MBBS degree course was introduced, and by 1947, the medical college became co-educational, welcoming students of all genders.

Our Not-for-Profit Commitment

As a strictly not-for-profit society, all available funds at CMC are dedicated to supporting its mission. These funds subsidise student education, provide free or subsidised treatment to deserving patients, fund charitable outreach activities, and are invested in infrastructure and projects necessary to sustain and enhance our capacity to serve and grow.

Network of hospitals

CMC’s network of primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary care teaching hospitals spread across six campuses in and around Vellore, is, together, a 3675-bedded multi-speciality medical institution of international repute. Missions outreach

To effectively practise our calling to be a faith-based establishment ministering to people of all faiths and from all walks of life, CMC has also instituted a missions outreach programme that seeks to broaden the network of organisations involved in the healing ministry, and is committed to reviving mission fields in the rural pockets across the country that lack access to quality medical services.
